Sensitivity to Smell

Many women know they are pregnant when they realize they can tell what their husband's had for lunch while he's pulling his car into the garage after arriving home from work. When your own perfume, lotion, body wash, and even deodorant make you feel sick, it could indicate that you are pregnant. You might not feel sick because of these smells, but you will notice that they seem far more noticeable than ever before.

Combination

The truth is that the only way to know for sure that you are pregnant is to take a home pregnancy test, go to the doctor, or have your blood tested for pregnancy. However, you might know you're pregnant earlier than that based on these symptoms. Some women experience all of the above and some women experience none. Boy or Girl? Is It Possible to Know at 12 Weeks?

For centuries, people have been proclaiming that they have the ability to predict the sex of a baby while it is still developing in the womb. Some people believe that the way a woman is carrying her baby can indicate the fetus' sex as well as her mood, the state of her hair or skin, the existence of morning sickness, the color of her urine and even the position she was in when she got pregnant. However, these are merely old wives tales and have no bearing in reality.

Points to Consider

Still, there has come into existence another theory in which a woman may be able to tell the sex of her baby as early as 12 weeks using an ultrasound scan. Until recently, a mom-to-be would have to wait until the 20-week scan or later to clearly see her baby's genitals. Now, though, more sonographers are researching what is known as the "nub theory," or the determination of a baby's sex based on the "angle of the dangle."

What is the Nub Theory?

Between 11 and 14 weeks' gestation, males and females have a protuberance that resembles a penis between the legs. At this point, the bulge looks incredibly similar in both sexes except for the angle at which they are pointing. According to the nub theory, a girl's "dangle" is 30 degrees or less relative to the backbone, and a boy's "dangle" protrudes at a 30-degree angle or more when the fetus is lying straight on its back.

In order for a sonographer to have the most success of predicting the correct sex, the fetus must not be curled up; it needs to be lying on its back as flat as possible. The image must be taken from the fetus' side as a profile shot, and it is often best if the fetus is right-side up.

Is the Nub Theory Accurate?

According to statistics, 11 weeks may be too early to use the nub theory to predict the baby's sex. An ultrasound performed at 12 weeks is around 80 percent accurate while a scan conducted at 13 weeks may be closer to 94 percent accurate. However, solid scientific research into whether or not the nub theory is a valid method of predicting sex is yet to be undertaken, largely because most medical providers believe that it is just too early to accurately predict a fetus' sex at 12 weeks.

Points to Consider

Some medical facilities simply will not allow sonographers to make any sex determinations at 12 weeks, and many prevent sonographers from informing families of the baby's sex at 20 weeks. Instead, some clinics and hospitals prefer that a sonographer take images and present the findings to a radiologist before an accurate determination is made.
However, sonographers should be prepared to answer questions relating to the nub theory as more women are attempting to discover the sex of their child as soon as possible. While sonographers should not necessarily recommend that parents-to-be paint their nurseries in blue or pink based on the nub theory, these guessing games can help to add a little excitement to the pregnancy.

When is the Best Time to Get Pregnant?

The Luteal Phase or the Post Ovulation Time is the stretch of time between a woman's time of ovulation up to the first day of bleeding of the menstrual period. This is a relatively fixed time in nearly all women being around 14 days. The actual length of the Luteal Phase may vary by a day or so but for each individual woman it is usually exactly the same length each month. The average length of time of the Luteal Phase is 14 days, some women may have a luteal phase of 15 days and some of 13 but for most it is 14 days long.

The length of the Luteal Phase is constant even in women who have irregular periods. For those who experience irregular monthly cycles, the 'irregular' part is actually the time from the beginning of the cycle (1st day of bleeding) up until the time of ovulation. Once ovulated then the period is guaranteed to start some 13 to 15 days after as long as fertilisation hasn't occurred.

So when is the best time to get pregnant?

Well obviously at the time of ovulation. The egg will only last some 12 hours or so before is becomes incapable of fertilization. The Ideal conditions for getting pregnant are to have live sperm inside and waiting at the time of ovulation being as sperm can live on average 2 or 3 days inside the female body.

When is the Best Time to Get Pregnant?

The trick therefore to becoming pregnant is to get to know your body and predict with as much exactitude as possible when you will start to ovulate so that you may have intercourse some hours before. Remember that repeated ejaculation on the male part will decrease the virility of the sperm.

The 'basic' way to know when you are about to ovulate, which will only really work with women who have regular cycles is the counting method. The cycle begins on the first day of bleeding. Counting from that day until the beginning of the next period will give you the total length of your menstrual cycle (normally about 28 days). Ovulation usually occurs between days 11 and 14.
If you are irregular with your periods then you should make a note of the length of your cycles over a few months and try and determine just how irregular you are and if possible work out an average length.

A very effective way to observe your cycle and discover your ovulation time is by using the basal body temperature method or BBT method. This entails using a special BBT thermometer which is calibrated in fractions of degrees. The vaginal temperature must be taken every morning (if possible at the same time each day and before daily activity begins.. ie before getting up). At the time of ovulation a notable rise in temperature is recorded. You will be able to observe from this the exact length of your luteal phase and you will notice just how regular it is (even for those with irregular periods) You will also get to realise the little signs and sensations that so subtly accompany ovulation. The disadvantage with this method is that it tells you when ovulation has occurred and the ideal conditions for getting pregnant as stated before are to have intercourse a few hours 'before' ovulation is due to occur.

Another way to predict ovulation is to observe the changes in texture of your cervical mucus. As the hormones within the female body fluctuate, so too does the texture of the cervical mucus changes. Normally it is thick and sticky, and when observed under a microscope appears to have of a sort of meshed fibre effect. Around ovulation time the mucus changes to be much thinner and clearer, this when viewed microscopically has a parallel fibre effect which actually aids the sperm to travel through the vagina by means of a basic and natural capillary action. The mucus will remain in this thin state for 2 or 3 days. This is the ideal time for conception.

A combination of all of the methods listed here should help you to get to know your cycle rhythm and learn just what your body is doing so that you may predict exactly when you are about to ovulate.

* Smoking not only causes damage to the fetus in the first few days of existence but also greatly lowers the chances of getting pregnant for both the male and female.

* The use of cannabis or marijuana acts as a natural contraceptive slowing the sperm's ability to travel by up to 50%.

* Are you aware of when you ovulate? (There are methods outlined at our website on how to do this if you are not.)

* In an ideal situation you should aim to make love a few hours before ovulation actually occurs.

* Repeated ejaculation dramatically lowers the male sperm count. To retain a healthy sperm count you should make no more than once every 2 or 3 days.

* Avoid the use of tight male underwear
